How can the environmental performance of photovoltaic technologies be assessed consistently as materials, manufacturing processes and supply chains evolve? This question connects the work of Nouha Gazbour, a member of SMARTLINE-PV’s CEA-Liten team, with the wider international PV research community. Smartline PV
At CEA-Liten, Nouha works across photovoltaic sustainability, market analysis and environmental assessment, helping integrate these perspectives into research and technology development. Her involvement in the International Energy Agency’s Photovoltaic Power Systems Programme, IEA PVPS Task 12, also contributes to the development of shared approaches for evaluating solar technologies. ines-solaire.org
At EU PVSEC 2026 in Rotterdam, the Task 12 workshop on 16 September featured a joint contribution by Nouha Gazbour, Michael Götz and Matthias Stucki. Götz and Stucki are affiliated with ZHAW, Switzerland. Their contribution addressed advances in life-cycle assessment and inventory data for photovoltaics, supporting more transparent and consistent environmental comparisons. IEA-PVPS
The conference programme also included “Relocating Photovoltaic Manufacturing to Europe: A Necessary but Insufficient Condition for Sustainable Photovoltaics by 2050,” co-authored by Déborah Moerlen and Nouha Gazbour, both from CEA/INES. This work brought the environmental implications of manufacturing location into the discussion on Europe’s photovoltaic future. ines-solaire.org
For SMARTLINE-PV, this expertise is relevant to the project’s work on life-cycle impacts and sustainable technology development. Thank you to Nouha and her colleagues for connecting research, environmental evidence and international scientific exchange.
