SMARTLINE-PV researchers from bifa Umweltinstitut and CEA-Liten have developed 20 ecodesign guidelines for flexible tin-based perovskite PV modules. Their publication in the EU PVSEC 2026 proceedings reports that 14 had already been implemented within the project.
The guidelines address material selection, solvent use, encapsulation and manufacturing processes. They evaluate potential improvements against technical feasibility, environmental impact, supply risk and economic implications, bringing sustainability considerations down to individual solar-cell layers and module components.
Rather than treating ecodesign as a final check, the approach integrates it into ongoing technology development. The guidelines are being reviewed and refined as the project progresses.
